How will the European Declaration on Cycling boost cycling tourism?

In April 2024, the European institutions adopted a European Declaration on Cycling, a historic milestone for cycling in Europe and the first inter-institutional cycling policy at the European level. How can this context boost cycling tourism? Our opening panel will bring perspectives from different stakeholders together to analyse the role and commitment of international and national players in recreational cycling and cycling tourism.

Isabelle Vandoorne has been a civil servant at the European Commission since 2001. She is Deputy Head of the Unit in charge of urban mobility policy, including cycling policy at DG MOVE. She has a mixed background in transport and digitalisation.

He is dealing with active lifestyle and promotion of active tourism, and coordinating the development of this area as a state secreatary. He believes that daily exercise is important regardless of age and gender, and that the quality of life is basically determined by regular physical activity. In everyday life, he cycles, runs, swims, picks up garbage in the Tisza and the Bodrog, and educates his four children and his environment to love the active life.

Kenneth Øhrberg Krag is the CEO of the Danish Cycling Federation. He has more than 15 years of experience in leading positions within the NGO sector and holds several board positions.

Patricia Carmona works in UN Tourism (World Tourism Organization) since October 2015, currently as Department Officer in the Market Intelligence, Policies and Competitiveness Department in the areas of policy and governance, tourism competitiveness, destination management and tourism for rural development. Among others, she coordinates the Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness (CTC) and the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism initiative.

Danish Road Directorate
Jonas Wamsler is team leader of the Danish Road Directorate's cycling unit, where he is coordinating and facilitating the current work with the new Danish cycling strategy. The Road Directorate builds cycle paths on state roads and support the construction of local cycle infrastructure. The Directorate also host the Danish Centre for Cycling Knowledge.

Jill is CEO of the European Cyclists’ Federation. Together with a team of skilled and passionate experts she advocates for more and better cycling. In 2023 she was recognised for her work with the Danish Cycling Embassy Leadership in Cycling Promotion award. Prior to joining ECF, she spent over 20 years in progressively senior roles at major international law firms. A US and Dutch national, Jill grew up near Chicago and has lived and worked in Europe for over 30 years, including in Belgium, Germany and the UK. She holds an MBA from Solvay Business School / Université Libre de Bruxelles and speaks German and Dutch. Her strong passion for cycling attracted her to ECF: She is an avid everyday and recreational cyclist who loves to explore the world by bike on cycling holidays.
