VIBORG
Ideally situated on The Ancient Road – Hærvejen and EuroVelo 3 – and in the middle of Denmark – the city of Viborg awaits your visit during the EuroVelo & Cycling Tourism Conference 2024.
This vibrant and modern city has a unique Danish history dating more than 1,000 years back, and today important parts of the city’s new history is formed on two wheels.
3 of Denmark’s 11 national cycling routes meet in Viborg and the Municipality of Viborg is engaged in a big effort to move as much transport, commuting and free time as possible onto bikes.
The Cycle Star (Danish: “Den midtjyske Cykelstjerne”) is an ambitious network of cycling paths meeting at the train and bus station and leading out through the municipality
– encouraging citizens to combine cycling and public trans- port and to use the bike instead of a car.
The BiKeep parking system at the train and bus station ensures travellers bikes are parked safely during the day. The combination of locked bike boxes (also capable of storing a cargo bike), lockers for bike helmets, batteries and personal belongings, make it an easy choice to travel by bike.
The children in Viborg’s schools are part of the nationwide annual campaign “All children bike” (Danish: “Alle børn cykler”) with more that 100,000 pupils attending. In both 2020 and 2022, the main prize for the campaign went to local classes from Viborg – inspiring even more children to go biking.
Cycling in Viborg is as much a leisure activity as it is a sport. The undulating landscape is a treasure chest for cyclists with quiet winding roads, rolling hills, forests, lakes and the inner- most part of Limfjorden – the biggest Danish fiord.
Viborg Trail Arena offers more than 100 km of mountain bike tracks all over the municipality. The tracks are all build by volunteers who combine their love for biking with creating the best possible conditions for others – giving something to their local neighborhood.
On the professional scene the World Championships in Duathlon in Viborg in 2022 also gave excellent cycling experiences – and again the locals were engaged; a family event before the professional race put focus on cycling and the joy of riding together.
The Ancient Road – Hærvejen – literally meaning “the army road” – is a piece of Danish history, formed by a glacier during the last ice age, that winds over 450 km up through the Jutland peninsula. As the main artery connecting Scandinavia to Europe and as a central trade route, Hærvejen has bound people together across geography for thousands of years. Based on this unique history, the 15 municipalities along the route are developing this historical landmark into a modern recreational infrastructure – creating value for the citizens and local communities, as well as attracting more visitors.
Hærvejen is embracing both the legacy and the localhood in its route through Jutland. Along the way, the route takes you close to everything that the Danish nature has to offer – the sea, coastline, heaths, forests, open land, and some of the most exciting historical sites in Denmark.
Hærvejen also forms the Danish part of EuroVelo 3 – you can say that by riding on EuroVelo 3 in Denmark you both ride in and on our history.
